Old town and the Obradoiro

The historic centre is the natural choice for a first visit and for those finishing the Camino. You are next to the cathedral, Praza do Obradoiro and Praza da Quintana. A few steps away are Rúa do Franco and Rúa do Vilar, full of taverns and octopus restaurants, and the Mercado de Abastos. It is almost entirely pedestrianised, so the car stays outside. Many places to stay are in old stone houses with only a few rooms.

Ensanche and the Alameda

South of the old town is the Ensanche, the modern part, with Praza Roxa as its landmark. There are shops, cafés and wine bars at neighbourhood prices. Alameda park separates this area from the old city and offers one of the best-known views of the cathedral. It is a good base for longer stays and for those who want more services while staying close to the centre. At night it has a student atmosphere, especially around Rúa da República Arxentina.

Best-rated in this area: México PR, with a score of 8.5 from 7,449 reviews.

Around the station

If you arrive by train or bus, the area around the main transport hub and Rúa do Hórreo saves you dragging luggage around. From here you can walk up to the old town through the Ensanche. It is practical for a one-night stopover or if you plan trips to the coast or Fisterra. There is more traffic, and a taxi can get right to the door more easily.

San Lázaro

On the east side of the city, on the way in along the French Way, San Lázaro is the area of the Conference Centre. It has quick road access and easier parking, which is why business travellers and those arriving by car choose it. To get to the old town there is a city bus or a long walk.
