Where to stay in Tui: the best areas

Old town and the cathedral

Old Tui clusters on the hill crowned by the cathedral of Santa María, with sloping streets, arcades and houses bearing coats of arms. Many Portuguese Way pilgrims end their stage here, so in the afternoon the squares and bars are lively. Sleeping in this area lets you visit the cathedral, the Poor Clares convent and Santo Domingo without the car.

Many streets are narrow and steep. If you have a large suitcase, look for somewhere on the edge of the old town, easier to reach by car.

Best-rated in this area: Ideas Peregrinas, with a score of 8.8 from 3,572 reviews.

The Miño and the International Bridge

The lower part of town reaches the river along the riverside walk and around the iron bridge to Portugal. It is a pleasant area for walking or cycling by the water, and from here you cross on foot to the other bank. It suits anyone wanting to move between the two countries who prefers flat streets. It is also convenient for cyclists and walkers following the riverside route.

Valença

On the Portuguese bank, the Valença fortress holds streets with shops, restaurants and places to stay inside its walls. At nightfall, when the shoppers leave, the walled town is almost empty. Remember that Portugal is an hour behind, which affects dinner and visiting times. It is a good choice if you want to add northern Portugal to your trip.

Monte Aloia and the countryside

Around Tui are rural parishes with stone houses, vineyards and country hotels. To the north rises the Monte Aloia Natural Park, with trails, viewpoints over the Miño valley and recreation areas. It is a good option for travellers with a car who want silence and have the motorway close for Vigo or northern Portugal.
