Old Town

Pontevedra’s old town is pedestrianised and quick to walk round. Its squares are small and lively: Praza da Ferrería, by the Peregrina sanctuary, Praza da Leña, with its stone crosses, and Praza do Teucro. At lunchtime and in the evening they fill with people out for tapas. It is the perfect area for a couples’ break or a first visit, as long as you are not bringing a car.

Best-rated in this area: PENSIÓN SANTA CLARA, with a score of 8.2 from 3,581 reviews.

Alameda and Praza de España

On the southern edge of the old town are the Alameda, a tree-lined promenade with views of the estuary, and Praza de España, with the town hall. Next to them are the ruins of the convent of San Domingos, part of the Museum of Pontevedra. It is a spacious, slightly quieter area, easy to reach by taxi, with the historic centre just round the corner.

Ponte do Burgo and the river Lérez

North of the centre, the Ponte do Burgo crosses the river Lérez. The Portuguese Way to Santiago enters the city over this bridge, so you will see plenty of pilgrims. Following the bank you reach the Illa das Esculturas, a park with open-air artworks, and the riverside paths. It is a pleasant area if you like walking or running, and leaves you a stroll from the squares.

Ensanche and the stations

Outside the historic centre, the Ensanche has busier avenues, more parking and plenty of services. The train and bus stations are side by side in this part of the city, so it is the practical choice if you arrive by public transport or plan day trips around the Rías Baixas, such as Sanxenxo, O Grove or the island of Ons. The old town is an easy walk away.

Best-rated in this area: PENSIÓN SANTA CLARA, with a score of 8.2 from 3,581 reviews.
