What the Costa Tropical is like
The Costa Tropical is the coastline of Granada, between Málaga and Almería, wedged between Sierra Nevada and the sea. Its subtropical climate allows avocados, mangoes and custard apples to grow, and the coast alternates pebble beaches and coves.
Which town to choose
Almuñécar is the town with the most hotels, with a castle and a seafront promenade. Salobreña has its white old town below its castle, Motril is the biggest and most practical town, and Castell de Ferro, in Gualchos, is the quietest.
When to go
July and August, when many people from Granada come down to the beach at weekends. The winter is mild and very sunny, with more space and lower prices.
Getting around
Granada is an hour away by car and Málaga airport an hour and a quarter. There are buses between the towns, although a car makes it easier to reach the coves.
