Old town

The streets climbing towards San Miguel castle are the heart of Almuñécar. Here are Plaza de la Constitución, with the town hall, the church of La Encarnación and tapas bars where locals eat. Staying here keeps you close to the museums and the two town beaches, a short walk downhill. It suits anyone who wants to combine history, local life and the beach without depending on the car.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Noy, with a score of 9.2 from 3,599 reviews.

San Cristóbal and the Peñón del Santo

San Cristóbal beach, of pebbles and shingle, opens west of the Peñón del Santo rock. Very close are El Majuelo park and the Loro Sexi bird park, an easy plan with children. The promenade has fish restaurants and terraces with sea views. It is a lively area in summer, with beach bars open until late.

Puerta del Mar and Velilla

East of the Peñón, the promenade continues along Puerta del Mar beach to Velilla, where the coast flattens out and the beach widens. There are plenty of seafront apartment buildings, with supermarkets and services on the same pavement. Families usually choose it, as do people spending several weeks, even in winter, when the mild climate draws many northern Europeans.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel SAN SEBASTIAN Almuñécar, with a score of 8.8 from 993 reviews.

La Herradura and Marina del Este

To the west, past Punta de la Mona, La Herradura occupies an enclosed bay between that headland and Cerro Gordo, with a smaller, quieter feel. Marina del Este, on Punta de la Mona, is home to the dive schools and boat trips. It is the area for divers, couples and anyone who prefers a seaside village without tall buildings. Its promenade, with terraces and sailing schools, can be walked end to end.

Best-rated in this area: H Boutique la Caleta bay, with a score of 8.7 from 1,501 reviews.
