What El Bierzo is like
El Bierzo is an area in the west of León, a mild valley between mountains, with Mencía vineyards, chestnut trees and Las Médulas, the old Roman gold mines declared a World Heritage Site. The French Way of the Camino crosses it from east to west.
Which town to choose
Ponferrada is the base town, with its Templar castle. Villafranca del Bierzo has a parador and an old town on the Camino, Molinaseca is one of the prettiest villages on the route, and Las Médulas has rural lodgings next to the mines.
When to go
Autumn, with the vineyards and chestnut trees in colour and the grape harvest. In summer many pilgrims pass through and it’s best to book in the Camino villages.
Getting around
Ponferrada has trains and buses from León and Madrid. For Las Médulas and the small villages you need a car.
