Where to stay in Ponferrada: the best areas

Old town and the castle

This is the area for those who come to see the town and want to do it all on foot. The Templar castle, the basilica of La Encina, the Clock Tower and the town hall square fit into a short walk, and the Museo del Bierzo is on the same Calle del Reloj. The Camino de Santiago also passes through, so many pilgrims choose to sleep in these streets before continuing to Cacabelos and Villafranca.

Slopes and cobbles are the norm. Bear in mind that the car is harder to move around the old town.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Los Templarios, with a score of 8.4 from 3,005 reviews.

La Puebla and the modern centre

Across the Sil is everyday Ponferrada, with the Avenida de España, the Plaza de Lazúrtegui, shops, cafés and set-menu restaurants. It suits you if you are travelling for work or want more choice for lunch and dinner. You can walk to the castle across the river.

Exits to the A-6

The places to stay at the entrances to the town, near the motorway access roads, are designed for those touring the Bierzo by car. From here you head out to Las Médulas, the southern valleys or the mencía wineries without crossing the centre, and come back at night without hunting for parking. They also work as a stop on a road trip between the Meseta and Galicia.

Santo Tomás de las Ollas and around

On the outskirts, on a rise above the town, Santo Tomás de las Ollas keeps a small Mozarabic church. In this village and others nearby there are rural houses for those who prefer to wake up with mountain views and go down to Ponferrada only for sightseeing. Columbrianos, where the Camino de Santiago leaves towards Camponaraya, is another quiet option a short distance from the centre.
