What the Maresme is like
It’s the coastal area between Barcelona and the Costa Brava. It has about 50 km of coarse-sand beaches, with the railway running right along the sea and towns following one after another. Behind are low hills with vineyards and farmhouses.
Which town to choose
Calella, Pineda de Mar, Santa Susanna and Malgrat de Mar, in the north, have most of the holiday hotels, many with pools and all-inclusive options. Mataró, the capital, and Arenys de Mar, further south, are closer to Barcelona and have a town and harbour feel.
When to go
June to September is beach season and some hotels only open in those months. In spring and autumn prices are better and many visitors use it as a base for Barcelona.
Getting around
The R1 Rodalies line runs along the coast from Barcelona to Malgrat de Mar and on to Blanes. From Calella you reach central Barcelona in just over an hour. El Prat airport is the nearest.
