The Rioja Alavesa is the area in the south of Álava, in the Basque Country, between the Sierra de Cantabria and the Ebro, with vineyards of the Rioja wine region, wineries by famous architects and walled villages on hilltops.
Which village to choose
Laguardia is the most visited village, walled and with wine cellars beneath its streets. Elciego has Frank Gehry’s titanium winery, with a hotel, and is the area’s other base.
When to go
September and October, with the harvest, are the most beautiful and busiest time. Weekends all year round see a lot of wine-tourism demand.
Getting around
Logroño is about 20 minutes away and Vitoria about 45. To visit wineries you need a car, or book tours with transport.
