Elciego village and San Andrés

The village is laid out around the Plaza Mayor and the church of San Andrés, with its two towers of different heights, visible from the surrounding vineyards. Its streets have stone houses bearing coats of arms and the odd bar where you can have a local wine.

Sleeping in the village gives you the peace of a small Rioja Alavesa village. It appeals to couples and to those on a winery route who want to walk back after dinner. At night there is hardly any noise, and in the morning you hear work in the vineyards.

Best-rated in this area: Agroturismo Valdelana, with a score of 8.6 from 1,496 reviews.

Around Marqués de Riscal

On the edge of the village is the Marqués de Riscal winery, with its titanium-roofed building designed by Frank Gehry. It is Elciego's best-known visit and the reason for many short breaks. Staying in this part puts you next to the vineyards, with views of the building and the Sierra de Cantabria in the background.

Navaridas and the road to Laguardia

To the north, Navaridas is an even smaller village surrounded by vines. From there you are a step away from Laguardia, a walled town with wine cellars dug beneath its streets. Laguardia can be seen from afar on its hill, with the Sierra de Cantabria behind. This option suits those travelling by car who want to combine several Rioja Alavesa villages on the same trip.

Best-rated in this area: Agroturismo Valdelana, with a score of 8.6 from 1,496 reviews.

Cenicero, across the Ebro

Crossing the Ebro to the south you reach Cenicero, already in La Rioja. It is a larger village, with more services and shops, and it also lives from wine. It suits you if you want a bit more going on or plan to explore both banks of the Rioja appellation, towards Haro or Logroño. To get to and from Elciego you will need a car, as you have to cross the bridge over the river.
