Inside the walls
Laguardia's old town is closed to traffic and consists of a few parallel streets, with Calle Mayor as its spine. If you stay inside, Plaza Mayor, the church of Santa María de los Reyes and the bars where you can order a local crianza are a step away. At night you hear nothing. Places to stay are small and the car stays in the car parks outside the gates.
By the gates and El Collado
At the foot of the walls, near the entrance gates and the El Collado promenade, there are houses and hotels easier to reach with luggage. You can walk into the old town in a moment and have the car handy for the wineries. From El Collado, home to the monument to Samaniego, you can see the Sierra de Cantabria and the sea of vines. It is the best choice if you are travelling with children or older people, as you avoid hauling luggage through the old town.
Among vineyards and wineries
On the lanes around the town there are isolated places to stay among the vines, several inside wineries or next to them. You sleep in complete silence and can often do the tour and tasting without moving. In return, you always depend on the car. Very close by, the Carralogroño lagoon has a flat path for walking and birdwatching. It is the area for couples and for anyone who comes mainly for the wine.
Elciego and Lapuebla de Labarca
Elciego, a few kilometres away, is a winemaking village with its church of San Andrés and its own underground cellars. Lapuebla de Labarca is beside the Ebro and has a very quiet atmosphere. Both work if you cannot find a room in Laguardia, if you are driving between wineries or if you prefer a less-visited village. From both you can see Laguardia's silhouette on its hill.
