What the Sierra de Gredos is like
The Sierra de Gredos is the highest part of Spain’s Central System, south of Ávila, with Almanzor peak, the Laguna Grande and cold-water gorges. The north face has pine woods and broom; the south, milder, chestnut trees and orchards.
Which village to choose
Navarredonda de Gredos, on the north face, has Spain’s first parador and is the base for the Plataforma de Gredos. On the south face, Arenas de San Pedro, Candeleda and Piedralaves have gorges for swimming and more choice.
When to go
In summer, for the natural pools and the cool mountain air. In spring and autumn for walking, and in winter the peaks are covered in snow.
Getting around
Madrid is about two hours away by car. There are few buses between the villages, so a car is best.
