Where to stay in Candeleda: the best areas

Candeleda village

Candeleda sits at the foot of the southern face of the Sierra de Gredos, looking over the Tiétar valley. Its centre keeps half-timbered houses with flower-filled balconies, cobbled slopes and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción at the top. Staying in the village puts the bars, shops and bakeries close by, and the mild climate makes walking pleasant almost all year.

From the centre you can walk down to the Santa María gorge, which runs through the village and forms cold pools where people swim in summer.

Mountain farms and rural houses

On the slopes around the village, among oaks, chestnuts and fig orchards, there are rural houses, campsites and farms with pools. It is the area preferred by families and groups of friends who want to switch off, walk the gorges and cook at home. Most are reached along narrow tracks, so without your own car it will be difficult.

El Raso

West of the village, El Raso is a small rural hamlet, known for the Celtic hill fort of the Vettones that can be visited nearby. Life here is even slower: country houses, meadows and views of the Gredos peaks. It suits those who want nature and a bit of history without crowds. For shopping or a drink, Candeleda is a few kilometres away by road.

Best-rated in this area: Casa Calañas, with a score of 9.5 from 14 reviews.

Chilla and Poyales del Hoyo

Heading up into the sierra you reach the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Chilla, surrounded by woodland and the starting point for trails. To the east, Poyales del Hoyo is a quiet neighbouring village with rural accommodation, a good option to combine with Candeleda on a long break. There is less going on here in summer and it is easy to find houses with a patio or garden, designed for groups travelling together.
