What the Val d’Aran is like
The Val d’Aran is in the north-west of Lleida, on the northern side of the Pyrenees, and the Garonne flows through it towards France. It has its own language, Aranese, Romanesque churches in almost every village and stone houses with slate roofs. In winter it’s above all Baqueira Beret, and in summer, lakes, forests and walking routes.
Which village to choose
If you’re coming to ski, Baqueira and the villages of the Naut Aran (Salardú, Tredòs, Arties) put you next to the slopes. Vielha, the capital, has more hotels, shops and restaurants open all year round, and is about 15 minutes from the resort. Further down the valley, Bossòst and Les are quieter and a little cheaper.
When to go
The ski season runs from December to April and is when prices rise most, especially at Christmas, Easter and long weekends. In summer the valley fills with hikers, and autumn, with the forests changing colour, is the quietest time.
Getting around
You arrive through the Vielha tunnel from Lleida, about two and a half hours away, or from France along the Garonne valley. There are buses between the villages, and shuttles to Baqueira in winter, but a car gives you much more freedom. On snowy days, carry chains.
