Where to stay in the Basque Country
San Sebastián
Donostia-San Sebastián is one of the most expensive cities in Spain for a hotel: the Old Town and the area around La Concha are in highest demand, and Gros, by Zurriola beach, is a little more affordable. Book well ahead in summer and during the film festival.
Bilbao and Vitoria
Bilbao has the Guggenheim and the Old Town; staying in Abando or by the river puts both within walking distance. Vitoria-Gasteiz, a quieter city, has a medieval old town and lots of green space. Rioja Alavesa, with Laguardia, is a winery destination.
The Basque coast
The coast between Hondarribia and Bermeo has fishing villages such as Getaria, Zumaia, Lekeitio and Mundaka, with small hotels and superb food. The weather is damp, so have a plan for rainy days.
