Old Town

The Seven Streets, Plaza Nueva and the cathedral of Santiago form Bilbao's old heart. It is the place for a pintxo crawl without watching the clock and for shopping at La Ribera market, by the river. Metro and tram stops are right there, so you can get around the whole city without a car. The buzz lasts until late, especially from Thursday to Saturday.

Best-rated in this area: LATROUPE La Granja, with a score of 9.2 from 9,312 reviews.

Abando and Gran Vía

Across the Arenal bridge begins the Ensanche. Around Gran Vía, Plaza Circular and Plaza Moyúa are offices, shops and cafés. It is the most practical option if you are here for work or arriving by train: Abando station is right here and the metro stops at Abando and Moyúa. The streets are wide and the nights quieter than in the Old Town.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Ilunion Bilbao, with a score of 8.3 from 14,507 reviews.

Abandoibarra and the Guggenheim

The old docklands are now Bilbao at its most modern. Next to the Guggenheim you have the riverside walk, the Fine Arts Museum, Doña Casilda park and the Euskalduna Palace. It is an open, pleasant setting for running or strolling. The tram runs along the river and gets you to the Old Town in a few stops.

Best-rated in this area: The Artist Grand Hotel of Art, with a score of 9.3 from 4,389 reviews.

Indautxu

If you prefer a residential neighbourhood with good shopping, Indautxu lies between Moyúa and the San Mamés area. It has its own metro stop and plenty of local bars for a drink with the locals. The museum and the centre are a short walk away.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Ilunion Bilbao, with a score of 8.3 from 14,507 reviews.

Deusto

On the other bank, opposite the Guggenheim, Deusto mixes the university with residential streets and unpretentious bars. The metro takes you to the centre in no time and, if you fancy a walk, the Deusto bridge brings you out next to the museum. A good option if you want a quiet night without being far away.

Best-rated in this area: Livensa Living Studios Bilbao, with a score of 8.3 from 6,270 reviews.
