Very good
Gijon is a top 5 Spanish destination for me, but this hostel..less so 😄
Liked: Firstly, understand this hostel is FAR from city centre, around 20+minutes walk BUT...if you want some AMAZING VIEWS of the ocean, the hostel is close to a park (rinconim) and the cliff walk of Cervigon, so it works out for that. The free breakfast helps 😋 Hot water in showers, lockers for valuables, privacy curtains on beds. -mere minutes walk from Hotel Begonia for some great food, especially dinner special (25euro for 3 course meal and beer 🍺) Free electrolyte bottle upon check in. It is a pretty chill place, all in all. Free coffee and fruit sure helps.
Disliked: It is FAR from the city centre as mentioned. Besides one girl who ACTUALLY cared and gave me useful information (especially about hotel Begonia), everyone else was pretty useless and knew close to NOTHING. Perhaps it's just me, as I've stayed in hundreds of hostels and actually volunteered and managed a fair few, I actually care about customer service and saw none of it there. Firstly, I couldn't tell who actually works there (get them hostel shirts). Secondly, if you're going to volunteer/work at a hostel, least you can do is be informed on what's around, or BASIC customer service, but maybe I expected too much and realistically I'm too old and experienced for hostels. Thirdly, I asked for reception to help me book a taxi only to be told: call this number, which I cannot without local data and it looked like I was being an inconvenience to them. So I walked all the way to the centre with all my luggage bc I lost all patience dealing with the "staff". They're all kids and as kids nowadays, from my point of view, very selfish and lazy (& high) and unless you care about what they do (surfing, in this case) or they can get you to pay for anything, doesn't look like you matter or they can be bothered. And that has generally been my experience with kids these days: I've been travelling the world for as long as they have been alive or even longer in some cases. They live in their phones posting social media thirst traps, "be jealous of my life" status, or useless political opinions devoid of any reality or logic or very high 😄 or in this case, just surfing and hostel or customer service lags in behind. Way in behind. If that's your thing, super. Not mine. But that's just me.
My family away from home!
Liked: The staff and facilities were great! Extremely helpful and create a very welcoming environment. The receptionist was the best! I’ll be sure to return if I make it back to Gijon!
Disliked: Nothing comes to mind.
Liked: Nice location, not conveniente but nice
Disliked: Very filthy
Liked: Nice house
Disliked: Not super clean
