Cimadevilla

Cimadevilla is the old fishermen’s quarter on the Santa Catalina peninsula. At the top of the hill is Chillida’s Elogio del Horizonte, and below are Plaza Mayor, the palace overlooking the marina and the remains of the Roman baths. Its narrow streets are full of cider houses and bars. Staying here puts you in the middle of the action, but if you are a light sleeper, avoid the streets with the most bars, especially at weekends.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Myro, with a score of 8.9 from 2,829 reviews.

Centre and Begoña

Between Plaza del Seis de Agosto, Paseo de Begoña and Calle Corrida is the Gijón of shops and cafés. It is flat and largely pedestrian, with everything close: Cimadevilla is a stroll away and San Lorenzo beach a few streets off. It is the most balanced option for a first visit and for anyone travelling without a car, as almost all the city bus lines pass through here.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Hernán Cortés, with a score of 8.8 from 4,736 reviews.

San Lorenzo and La Arena

The Muro de San Lorenzo runs along Gijón’s town beach from the church of San Pedro to the mouth of the Piles river. Behind it is La Arena, a residential neighbourhood with plenty of restaurants. It is the ideal area if you are travelling in summer, with children, or want to wake up to views of the Bay of Biscay. From the far end of the promenade you can continue along the coastal path towards El Rinconín and El Cervigón.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel San Miguel, with a score of 8.7 from 2,511 reviews.

Poniente and the marina

On the other side of Cimadevilla is Poniente beach, smaller and sheltered, next to the marina and the Aquarium. It is a quiet, convenient area for families, with the centre a few minutes’ walk away. From here you can also walk easily to Cimadevilla along the harbour.

Best-rated in this area: Munna Hotel Boutique, with a score of 9.0 from 3,302 reviews.
