Fabulous
Unique place, but our return visit was let down by poor communication, basic facilities and neglect
Liked: Staying in the Sacromonte is a wonderful experience. Staying at Cuevas El Abanico not so much.
Disliked: The communication with the owner prior to our arrival was extremely difficult. I first tried using the Booking.com messaging system, but my messages went unanswered. I also tried phoning several times, but each time my call went to voicemail, and none of my messages were returned. I eventually managed to speak to someone from an agency called Freshlanding, which I assume handles the property's advertising and bookings. They were very kind and helpful, but were unable to answer my specific questions regarding access to the caves and parking. Eventually, presumably after Freshlanding contacted the property on my behalf, I received a phone call from a man named Carlos Martín, who provided the information I needed. That was the only direct contact I had with anyone from the property. I had actually stayed at Cuevas El Abanico once before, about ten years ago, and had been extremely satisfied with the experience. Unfortunately, things seem to have changed considerably since then. The rooms themselves were clean, but the property as a whole had a somewhat neglected, almost half-abandoned feel. The outdoor areas had clearly not been prepared for our arrival: leaves covered much of the ground, and there were old sheets hanging on a clothesline in the upper part of the property that looked as though they had been there for quite some time. We were a group of seven and had rented all four caves. I stayed in Cave 5, which was the smallest and, by far, the hottest. I sent a WhatsApp message to the number supposedly belonging to the owner to ask whether it would be possible to have a fan, but, once again, my message was ignored. The kitchen facilities were also very basic. There were very few utensils and not nearly enough glasses for a property accommodating a group of our size — we had, for example, just one wine glass. Anyone planning to stay here should not expect to do much actual cooking, as the kitchen is simply not equipped for it.
Clean and beautiful location, however no phone signal or wifi
Liked: Unique and peaceful location in the Sacromonte Caves area. It is a special experience to stay inside a historic cave. The bedding was clean and the temperature was cool and pleasant despite several 36 degree days outside. The kitchen facilities and shower were clean and comfortable, although the shower occasionally did not drain quickly enough so the water leaks all over the bathroom floor despite guest’s best efforts to not use much water and aim the water jet away from the shower door. A sloped lip at the shower door could help contain the leaking. The washing machine was clean and worked well and detergent is provided, although it does not advise how long the cycle will take so be aware that the washing may take 2 hours. There is a good Elemen supermarket in the Albaicin about 15 minutes walk away and the C34 bus stop is 5-10 min walk away. I appreciated that the host allowed early check-in when requested beforehand.
Disliked: There is no phone signal inside the cave. You must go outside to the street to get phone reception. The wifi also did not work during the three days I stayed, despite reporting the issue 2 hours after arrival to the host. You have to prepare yourself for no reception and no wifi, so download offline maps and important info beforehand and bring your own entertainment! Electricity worked fine. There is no physical welcome by the host and access information is provided in a webpage sent a few days before, so be aware you must check this carefully ahead of arrival. The key code for access only activates at 3pm even if you have requested early bag drop, so if you expect to arrive earlier, you should carefully arrange bag drop or early check-in with the host beforehand, so you are not stuck in 36 degree heat trying to get phone reception to talk to the host. Do not bring a heavy suitcase unless you are quite fit, as you will have to carry it for 10 minutes uphill to the entrance, from the C34 bus stop. In general, be sure to be quite fit and wear appropriate shoes to stay in this area as there are lots of hills (of course!). The TV also did not work due to unstable wifi. It would have been great to have a tea towel to wipe your hands in the kitchen. All in all, it was a special experience as the area is so beautiful, however do prepare yourself for the lack of some modern comforts if you wish to stay.
Fabulous in lots of ways but kitchen too basic
Liked: Location was fabulous and it was cool and pleasant. Bathroom and beds were great
Disliked: Bit too basic.. cooling facilities were not great..
Liked: The place was interesting and fun. Nice shower... frig and coffee maker handy. Appreciate the washing machine. Great views...
Disliked: A bit of a climb from closest place a cab could make it to and uber couldn’t even get that far.. and there was a bit more outside noise from the neighborhood with windows open during hot time. There was dust from the walls in the main bedroom... not noticed in 2nd bedroom.
Great cave apartment
Liked: Great location, good water pressure, Clean. Check in was a bit late but worth it.
Better communication would have eased our problems locating the property but we were unable to get phone calls to connec
Liked: Staying in a cave was a very unique experience.
Disliked: We were warned it was hard to reach, true enough, but it was also difficult to locate. Suggest using the taxi stand as à landmark and go uphill from there! We never did find the suggested parking garage, but luckily found street parking. In addition, one room was not made up for stay (linens were on the kitchen table), and the other room had a backed up shower drain that flooded about 1/3 of the space. Outside tables and chairs were not rinsed off for guest use.
