Where to stay in Andalusia

Historic cities

Seville, Granada and Córdoba are best seen by staying inside the old town: in Seville, Santa Cruz or El Arenal; in Granada, the Albaicín or the streets around the cathedral; in Córdoba, the Jewish Quarter next to the Mezquita. All three can be combined in one trip by high-speed train. Summer is very hot, so spring and autumn are the best seasons.

Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz

The Costa del Sol, from Nerja to Estepona, has the widest choice of beach hotels and aparthotels, with Málaga as the gateway. The Costa de la Luz, from Tarifa to Huelva, has longer, more natural beaches, strong winds around the Strait and white villages such as Vejer and Conil. Almería has coves in Cabo de Gata and sunshine almost all year.

Inland and the mountains

For nature, the white villages in the hills of Cádiz and Málaga (Ronda, Grazalema, Zahara), the Alpujarra, and the Cazorla and Aracena mountains have rural hotels and cortijos (country estates). In winter, Sierra Nevada is the southernmost ski resort in Europe, less than an hour from Granada.
