Plaza Nueva and the cathedral

The flat centre is the most practical choice. From Plaza Nueva the Cuesta de Gomérez climbs to the Alhambra and the Carrera del Darro begins. A few streets away are the cathedral, the Royal Chapel, the Alcaicería market and Plaza de Bib-Rambla. It is easy to find bars that serve a free tapa with your drink, a true Granada custom. Gran Vía de Colón and Calle Reyes Católicos have stops for almost every bus.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Maciá Granada Five Senses Rooms & Suites, with a score of 10.0 from 6,651 reviews.

Albaicín

Sleeping in the old Moorish quarter is an experience: white houses, cármenes (walled gardens) and views of the Alhambra from viewpoints such as San Nicolás. The Paseo de los Tristes, along the Darro river, is beautiful at night. On the downside, the streets are steep and cobbled. Small city buses run up from Plaza Nueva and save you the climb. Bear in mind many places cannot be reached by car.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Maciá Granada Five Senses Rooms & Suites, with a score of 10.0 from 6,651 reviews.

Realejo

The old Jewish quarter sits at the foot of the Alhambra hill. It has a real neighbourhood feel, the Campo del Príncipe square full of terraces and street-art murals on its walls. It is quieter than the centre and a short walk from Plaza Nueva. Good for couples and anyone after a local atmosphere. It is also handy for walking up to the Alhambra along the Paseo de la Antequeruela.

Best-rated in this area: Porcel Alixares, with a score of 8.5 from 11,604 reviews.

Camino de Ronda and the station

If you arrive by train or car, this more modern area is convenient. Granada's metro runs along the Camino de Ronda and stops next to the train station. Parking is easier than in the old town, and there are supermarkets and local shops. For business trips, also consider the area around the Conference Centre by the Genil river. The centre is a bus ride or a walk away.
