A wonderfully nostalgic experience – a journey back to holidays of my childhood

Liked: I would thoroughly recommend Pension Getaria to anyone wishing to relive the experience of holidays in Spain and continental Europe during the 1960s and 1970s. The dark wooden panelling, tiled floors and narrow twin beds all evoke a bygone era, offering a degree of authenticity that more modern establishments struggle to reproduce. Those concerned about environmental sustainability will be reassured to discover that soap and shampoo are thoughtfully provided in individual disposable sachets, whilst the plastic drinking cups can similarly be discarded after a single use. Although our visit coincided with relatively modest outdoor temperatures of 15–20°C, I suspect the experience would be even more authentic in July or August, when the absence of air conditioning might allow guests to enjoy indoor temperatures reminiscent of Mediterranean summers before modern climate control became commonplace. For the complete experience, I would also recommend attempting to make a hot drink in your room. Hot water can be obtained from the owner, although guests should remember to bring their own tea, coffee and preferably a suitable drinking vessel. Perhaps the establishment’s greatest achievement is its remarkable resistance to the passage of time. With seemingly little pressure from local competition, there is every reason to hope that the character of the accommodation will remain largely undisturbed by modernisation for many years to come. A rare opportunity to discover how little the holiday accommodation experience needs to change over half a century.

Great place to stay when visiting Getaria!

Liked: We had a lovely room in this old building - hostess was very helpful and gave us tickets for a deal on breakfast at a cafe close by.

Clean with comfortable beds, but tired, hot & noisy hotel

Liked: The beds were comfortable and it was clean. Coffee and tea available in reception. We kept in touch with the owners to advise that we might arrive after the opening hours of reception, we were told that this would incur a 40€ late arrival fee. In the end we arrived 7 minutes late and the owners did not charge the fee - we believe this was compensation for problems during our stay.

Disliked: The hotel is located on the main coast road with a lot of summer traffic, 24 hours a day. If you go during hot weather, it is impossible to sleep with the windows open, so you must choose between hot room or noisy room. Our first night coincided with Getaria’s August fiesta, which made the noise situation even worse - but there was extreme traffic noise even after the fiesta finished. The last night there, there was a problem with the plumbing in another room that began at 4am which meant we couldn’t sleep even with earplugs due to noise. In the morning when we reported this, we were told we should have dealt with the problem ourselves at 4am by waking guests in other rooms to try and find the problem. The furniture and facilities are well used and the triple room is small. There is free parking available in the side streets near the hotel, but it is very difficult to find any spots during August. There is paid parking nearby, but due to how crowded Getaria is in the summer, the nearest we found each day was 1km+ round trip walk to and from the hotel.
