Centre and the Malecón

Zarautz’s seafront promenade, known as the Malecón, runs along the beach parallel to the centre. Behind it lies the town, with Calle Nagusia, the town hall square and pintxo bars on almost every corner. Nearby are the Torre Luzea, the Narros Palace and the church of Santa María la Real.

Staying here lets you walk to the sand in flip-flops and go out for dinner without the car. It is the liveliest area at sunset, when people come out to stroll along the Malecón.

Best-rated in this area: Pensión Txiki Polit, with a score of 8.4 from 2,947 reviews.

The surf beach

Zarautz beach is long, open and has waves almost all year. Along the promenade there are surf schools hiring out boards and wetsuits. If you are coming to learn or to surf every day, look for accommodation in the streets near the promenade, so you can walk down with your board easily. In stormy weather the sea breaks hard, so watch the flags.

Iñurritza and the dunes

At the western end of the beach is the protected Iñurritza biotope, with dunes, salt marsh and a boardwalk through it. The golf course is next door. The area has roomier homes and less bustle than the centre. It suits you if you want peace or are travelling with young children. The wooden boardwalk is quick to walk and makes a pleasant stroll at sunset.

Best-rated in this area: Blai Blai Hostel, with a score of 8.8 from 1,504 reviews.

Getaria and Santa Bárbara

The coast road leads to Getaria, the home town of Juan Sebastián Elcano, with its fishing port and Monte San Antón, known as the Mouse of Getaria. There you will find fish grills and the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum.

Between the two towns, on the slopes of Monte Santa Bárbara, are txakoli vineyards and farmhouses. Euskotren trains and buses run from Zarautz to San Sebastián.

Best-rated in this area: Pensión Txiki Polit, with a score of 8.4 from 2,947 reviews.
