What the Côte d’Azur is like
It is the French Riviera, the Mediterranean coast between Saint-Tropez and the Italian border. It has beaches, coves, villages perched above the sea such as Èze, and cities such as Nice, Cannes and Antibes.
Which area to choose
Nice has the widest choice, the airport and good transport. Cannes and Antibes are pricier and more glamorous. Èze and Beaulieu-sur-Mer are small and quiet, and Fréjus is a little cheaper. Grasse, inland, is the perfume capital.
When to go
June to September for the beach, with July and August the most expensive months. In May the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix push prices up sharply.
Getting around
Nice airport is the gateway. The coastal train links Cannes, Antibes, Nice, Beaulieu and Èze, and buses are frequent.
