Where to stay in the French Alps
What the French Alps are like
They cover eastern France, along the borders with Switzerland and Italy, and include the highest peak in Western Europe, Mont Blanc. There are big ski resorts, mountain lakes and villages of wooden chalets.
Which area to choose
Chamonix, at the foot of Mont Blanc, is the base for mountaineering and the Aiguille du Midi cable car. Megève is an elegant resort with a medieval village. Annecy, on its lake, lets you combine town, water and mountains.
When to go
December to April for skiing. In July and August there is hiking, swimming in the lakes and the cable cars are running. In spring and autumn many resort hotels close.
Getting around
Geneva is the nearest airport to Chamonix, Megève and Annecy, an hour or less away. There are trains and buses, but a car gives you more freedom.
