Lavender fields, stone villages and Roman cities such as Arles and Avignon.

Where to stay in Provence

What Provence is like

It is south-eastern France between the Rhône and the Alps: lavender fields, hilltop stone villages, markets and cities with Roman and medieval monuments.

Which area to choose

Avignon, with the Palais des Papes, has plenty of choice and fast trains. Aix-en-Provence is elegant and lively, and Arles keeps its Roman amphitheatre. Saint-Rémy is a charming small town, and Cassis has a harbour and calanques.

When to go

The lavender blooms from mid-June to the end of July. In July the Avignon theatre festival fills the city. Spring and September bring good weather and fewer people.

Getting around

The TGV reaches Avignon and Aix from Paris and Marseille, and Marseille has an airport. To tour the villages and the lavender fields you need a car.
