  Liked: My husband and I stayed at Amalen for 8 nights for our honeymoon, and we had the absolute best experience! The hotel itself is small, quaint, yet luxurious. We stayed in room 2, and thoroughly enjoyed sitting out at our private pool to relax during the daytime. The bed was SO comfortable, and the dim lighting throughout the room was very relaxing. We had comfortable rides arranged by the hotel to and from the airport, which made out arrival and departure stress-free. Perhaps the best part, was the daily breakfast. We were served a generous portion of traditional greek breakfast items that changed each day. We were also asked our preferences, as they were happy to accommodate any requests (we were more than happy with what we were served). The primary staff member (I believe it is spelled Iakovos) helping us was exceptional! He checked in on us frequently, and wanted to ensure that we had the best experience possible. On days that we missed breakfast due to other planned activities, he brought us breakfast boxes the night before so we would have something to eat the next morning. The hotel sits right at the edge of the Old Town area, which made walking super feasible. We did not rent a car, but felt that we had plenty of places to see, eat and enjoy at a walkable distance. We enjoyed exploring the Fortezza, which is just down the road from the hotel. We were also easily able to walk over to the beach stretch to rent chairs for the day. If we ever find ourselves returning to Crete, we would without a doubt go back to Amalen Suites for another stay. I will say that if we returned for another extended stay, we would be interested in trying one of the upper rooms, as I understand that they are a bit roomier and that the pools are heated. However, our first floor room was still one of the nicest places we have stayed on vacation. If you are looking for accommodations in Crete, look no further!

  Liked: A wonderful and personal stay We stayed here for two nights as a little treat for ourselves, and it was definitely worth it. It’s a very small and intimate hotel, with only around 4–5 rooms, which creates a really personal and peaceful atmosphere. The service was exceptional. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and we really appreciated how personal everything felt. They remembered our names and were always happy to help with anything we needed, which made us feel very welcome. Our room was beautiful, with tasteful interior design and, importantly for us, great lighting. It was clear that a lot of thought had gone into the details. We also had a private pool directly connected to our room, which was a fantastic bonus and gave us the opportunity to relax and enjoy some privacy. The breakfast was also very good. They asked what we would like and if we had any particular preferences, which made it feel much more personal than a standard hotel breakfast. The location was perfect for us, right on the edge of the old town. It was an ideal base for exploring the old town and made it easy to come and go while still being able to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the hotel. A beautiful little hotel with exceptional personal service. We really enjoyed our stay and would love to come back!

  A little slice of haven

  Liked: We have nothing but praise for Amalen Suites. The place and the suite met all of our expectations. Generous and delicious breakfast, great room service, clean suite with refined design, exceptionally comfortable bed and a really nice outdoor area with a private pool. The host and all other employees have been very friendly and helpful. Our stay was a one to remember. Will definitely recommend Amalen and be back in future.

  incredible spot, would recommend for couples wanting a uniquely calm experience inside the Old Town

  Liked: This spot is really special. It feels like sleeping inside a thoughtfully designed spa.

  Disliked: A few suggestions because I want to see this place succeed-- I booked a suite several months in advance for over a week as I was very excited to try out Amalen Suites, an amazing design for a boutique hotel. However, after I arrived, one of the very friendly managers hinted to me that next time I should select one of the higher floor suites as they are nicer and have more natural light options. This would have been great information to have had in advance, however, so I can suggest reviewing the advance reservations and checking in with guests who are coming for the first time before they arrive to ensure they've selected the best suite for their needs. The sewage smell -- which is a problem all over Rethymno -- should be addressed with a more creative solution (cover the vents with rugs, perhaps?) There is no reliable Wifi access inside the suites. I had to use my phone data. Perhaps routers inside each suite would help? Last but not least, the black-out curtains to cover the windows were installed at the same height, but blackout curtains should be installed above the daytime curtain to fully block the morning light.

  Disliked: There were some minor repairs that needed to be made. For a place that fancy it should have been done as they were easy fixes. That said the staff was so concerned about our satisfaction it wasn’t worth making a big deal about
