What the Aeolian Islands are like
They are seven volcanic islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea, north of Sicily, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They have coves of volcanic stone, very clear water and two active volcanoes, Stromboli and Vulcano.
Which island to choose
Lipari is the largest and the best base, with more hotels and boats to the others. Vulcano has mud baths and fumaroles. Salina is the greenest and quietest. Stromboli is the choice for seeing the volcano at night.
When to go
From June to September there are more boats and everything is open, but in August the islands fill up and prices rise sharply. May and late September are good months.
Getting around
Ferries and hydrofoils run from Milazzo, in Sicily, and in summer also from Naples. You get between the islands by boat. Catania and Palermo have the nearest airports.
