What the Cinque Terre are like
They are five villages on the Ligurian coast, Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, built on cliffs among terraced vineyards. They form a national park and are a World Heritage Site. Cars barely get in, and you get around by train, by boat or on foot.
Which village to choose
Monterosso is the largest, with a sandy beach and more hotels. Vernazza and Manarola are the most photogenic, with very few rooms. Riomaggiore is next to La Spezia, and Corniglia, up on the hill, is the quietest. La Spezia and Levanto, at either end, have far more choice and lower prices.
When to go
April to October is the best time for walking and swimming, but in summer the villages fill with day-trippers at midday. Staying in a village lets you see it in the morning and at sunset, without the crowds. It is worth booking well ahead.
Getting around
The train between La Spezia and Levanto stops at all five villages several times an hour, and in season boats run along the coast. The Cinque Terre Card covers the trains and the park's trails. By car it is difficult: there is hardly any parking.
