What Lake Como is like
It is an Alpine lake shaped like an upside-down Y, in Lombardy, surrounded by mountains, villas with gardens and villages running down to the water. Bellagio sits on the point where its arms divide.
Which area to choose
Como, at the southern end, has more hotels and is less than an hour from Milan. Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio are the most visited villages, in the middle of the lake, with hotels with views and higher prices.
When to go
April to October, when all the boats run and the gardens are open. July and August are the busiest months; in winter many hotels close.
Getting around
There are trains from Milan to Como and Varenna. Boats and ferries link the lakeside villages and are the most comfortable way to get around.
