Where to stay in the Douro Valley

What the Douro Valley is like

It is the Portuguese stretch of the Douro river, where the grapes for port wine are grown on terraces on the slopes. The Alto Douro wine region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many quintas, the wine estates, offer visits, tastings and rooms.

Which area to choose

Peso da Régua is the largest town, with a train station and the Douro Museum. Pinhão, further upriver, is surrounded by quintas and is the centre of the most beautiful part of the valley. Sleeping at a quinta is the most typical experience. Vila Real and Amarante, a little further from the river, have more choice, and Porto works as a base for day trips.

When to go

The grape harvest, between September and early October, is the liveliest time and the first to book up. Spring is quiet and green. In July and August the valley is very hot.

Getting around

The Douro line train leaves Porto (São Bento) and follows the river to Régua, Pinhão and Pocinho. There are also river cruises from Porto. To go from quinta to quinta, a car is best, on winding roads above the valley.
