Aliados, Baixa and SΓ£o Bento

The modern centre revolves around the Avenida dos Aliados and SΓ£o Bento station. Here you are in the upper part of the city, with the metro, regional trains and shopping streets such as Santa Catarina. It is the best base for a first visit: almost everything is less than twenty minutes' walk away, and the walk down to the Ribeira is short.

The streets around the ClΓ©rigos Tower and Rua das Flores have cafΓ©s, restaurants and restored buildings turned into places to stay.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Spot Family Suites, with a score of 9.4 from 7,622 reviews.

Ribeira

The Ribeira is the postcard view of Porto: narrow coloured houses, terraces over the Douro and the Dom LuΓs I bridge right beside them. Staying here means waking up by the river, but terrace noise goes on until late and the hills up to the centre are steep. Ask about access if you arrive by car: many streets are pedestrianised.

Best-rated in this area: Vincci Ponte de Ferro, with a score of 9.4 from 7,077 reviews.

Vila Nova de Gaia

Across the bridge, Gaia has the riverside lined with port cellars and the best viewpoints over Porto. The hotels by the river have views of the Ribeira, and you can cross the bridge on foot on the lower deck or by metro on the upper one. It is a slightly quieter option with more room to park.

Best-rated in this area: ClipHotel, with a score of 8.6 from 2,514 reviews.

Boavista and Foz

Boavista, around the roundabout of the same name and the Casa da MΓΊsica, has business hotels with good metro connections. Further west, Foz do Douro is the residential district by the sea, with a seafront promenade and small beaches. Ideal if you prefer calm and the sea, bearing in mind that you need the tram or bus to get to the centre.

Best-rated in this area: Porto PalΓ‘cio Hotel by The Editory, with a score of 8.5 from 5,447 reviews.
