Where to stay in the Algarve
Barlavento (west)
The western Algarve (Lagos, Portimão, Carvoeiro, Albufeira) has the most photographed cliff and cave beaches and the largest choice of hotels and apartments. Albufeira has most of the nightlife; Lagos combines a historic centre and beaches.
Sotavento (east)
The east (Tavira, Olhão, Vila Real de Santo António) is quieter, with the Ria Formosa lagoon, sand islands reached by boat and slightly warmer water. Faro, with the airport, has a small historic centre.
When to go
The beach season is long, from May to October, and in July and August you need to book ahead. In winter the climate is mild and the Algarve is a destination for golf and long stays.
