Where to stay in Madeira

Funchal

Funchal has most of the hotels: the hotel zone west of the centre has hotels with pools and sea views, and the old town has smaller places to stay near the market and the restaurants.

The rest of the island

Madeira is a mountain island: levadas (irrigation channels with footpaths), viewpoints and natural pools such as those at Porto Moniz. To get around, it is worth hiring a car or booking tours. Porto Santo, the neighbouring island, has a long sandy beach and is reached by boat or plane.

When to go

The climate is mild all year. The Flower Festival in spring and New Year's Eve, with its fireworks, are the busiest times.
