Hostels and guesthouses in Portugal

Simple, well-located places to stay for a good night’s sleep on a budget.

How to choose a hostel or a guesthouse

Guesthouse or hostel

In Portugal a guesthouse (pensão, residencial or alojamento local) is a simple place to stay with private rooms, often in a flat in the centre. A hostel has mostly shared dorms with bunk beds, a shared kitchen and a backpacker atmosphere, although many also offer private rooms.

What to check before booking

Check whether the bathroom is private or shared, whether reception is open around the clock or you have to tell them your arrival time, and whether the building has a lift. In hostels, see whether there are lockers and whether the dorms are mixed.
