What the Costa del Azahar is like
It’s the coastline of Castellón, named after the orange blossom. It has long sandy beaches, rocky coves and a mountain range, the Serra d’Irta, that reaches the sea between Peñíscola and Alcossebre with no coast road.
Which area to choose
Peñíscola, with its castle above the sea, and Benicàssim, with its villas and its music festival, have the most hotels. Oropesa del Mar is a family destination, Alcossebre is quieter, and Vinaròs and Benicarló have harbours and a small-town feel.
When to go
From June to September for the beach, with August the busiest month. Spring and autumn bring good weather and lower prices.
Getting around
The coastal railway links Valencia, Castellón, Benicàssim, Oropesa and Vinaròs. Castellón airport has few flights, and Valencia airport is an hour from Castellón.
