What the Ebro Delta is like
The Ebro Delta is the mouth of the river in the south of Tarragona, a plain of rice fields, lagoons and wild beaches protected as a nature park. It’s one of the best places in Europe for birdwatching, with flamingos and herons.
Which town to choose
Deltebre is the centre of the park, with rural hotels and houses among the rice fields. Riumar is next to the river mouth and the beach, and Sant Carles de la Ràpita, in the south, has a port, seafood and more choice.
When to go
In spring the fields are flooded and mirror the sky; in late summer the rice is green and gold. For birdwatching, autumn and winter are best.
Getting around
The delta is flat and easy to explore by bike. You need a car to get there from Tarragona or Valencia, and the train stops at L’Aldea-Amposta, about 15 minutes away.
