What the Garrotxa is like
It’s an inland area of Girona with more than 40 extinct volcanoes, covered in forest, in the Volcanic Zone nature park. It has beech woods such as the Fageda d’en Jordà and medieval villages above rivers.
Which village to choose
Olot, the capital, has the most hotels and is surrounded by volcanoes. Besalú, with its Romanesque bridge and Jewish quarter, is the most visited village. Across the rest of the area there are farmhouses and rural hotels, such as those in Santa Pau or the Alta Garrotxa.
When to go
In autumn the beech wood changes colour and it’s the most beautiful time. Spring is good for walking, and in summer it’s cooler than on the coast.
Getting around
There’s no train; there are buses from Girona and Barcelona to Olot and Besalú. A car is best for getting around the volcanoes and small villages, although there are walking and cycling routes.
