Central Olot

The Passeig d'en Blay, the Plaça Major and the Firal form the city centre. Here you have the church of Sant Esteve, the shopping streets and most of the bars and restaurants. From the old town you can walk up the Montsacopa volcano and stroll to the Parc Nou, home of the Volcano Museum. On the Passeig d'en Blay itself you will see modernista façades such as the Casa Solà-Morales.

It is the most convenient option if you do not want to drive at night and like eating out. It is also where the Carrilet greenway starts, ideal if you bring a bike.

Santa Pau road and the Fageda

East of the city, the road to Santa Pau crosses the heart of the natural park. Along it lie the Fageda d'en Jordà, a beech wood on volcanic ground, the Croscat volcano and the Santa Margarida crater, and there are masies converted into rural accommodation. If you want to set off walking from the door and sleep in total silence, this is your area. At the end of the road, Santa Pau keeps its arcaded square and castle.

Sant Joan les Fonts and Castellfollit

Following the river Fluvià north, Sant Joan les Fonts has a Romanesque monastery and a walk past old lava flows. A little further on, Castellfollit de la Roca perches on its basalt cliff. They are small villages, well placed for combining the volcanoes with Besalú. The train does not reach the Garrotxa, so here you will get around by car or on the buses linking these villages with Olot.

Les Preses and the Vall d'en Bas

To the south, Les Preses and the villages of the Vall d'en Bas, such as Sant Esteve d'en Bas or Hostalets d'en Bas, offer a landscape of meadows and mountains, with stone streets and wooden balconies. The greenway passes through Les Preses, making it a good base for families who want to cycle on easy terrain.
