Where to stay in Besalú: the best areas

Old town

Staying in the village puts you a few metres from the bridge over the Fluvià, the call (Jewish quarter) and the Plaça Prat de Sant Pere. During the day the streets fill with visitors, but first thing and at dusk you have them almost to yourself, and the floodlit bridge can be seen from the riverbank. Choice comes down to small hotels, rooms in stone houses and the odd apartment, with few places.

It is best to leave the car on the outskirts, because the streets in the centre are narrow. Few restaurants stay open at night, so book a table if you come in high season.

Best-rated in this area: Els Jardins De La Martana, with a score of 9.1 from 1,868 reviews.

Farmhouses in the surroundings

On the hills around Besalú, in places such as Sant Ferriol or Maià de Montcal, there are stone masies (farmhouses) turned into rural tourism. They usually have a pool, fields around them and breakfasts with local produce. They are ideal for families and stays of several days, always with a car, and many are rented whole to groups.

Serinyà

A few kilometres towards Banyoles, Serinyà is a small village known for its prehistoric caves, visited in an archaeological park. Staying here puts you between Besalú and Lake Banyoles, with Girona within easy reach by road. It is quiet and works well if you want to split your days between the Garrotxa and the Pla de l'Estany.

Argelaguer and Tortellà

On the road towards Olot, these two villages bring you closer to the volcanoes, Castellfollit de la Roca and the beech wood of the Fageda d'en Jordà. They have rural houses and village life, with hardly any visitors and the odd restaurant serving local cooking. They are the option for those planning walks or bike rides through the Fluvià valley.
