It’s the area in the north of Burgos, between the plateau and Cantabria: gorges of the Ebro, waterfalls, caves such as Ojo Guareña and stone villages such as Orbaneja del Castillo, Frías and Puentedey.
Which village to choose
Medina de Pomar and Villarcayo are the towns with the most services. Espinosa de los Monteros is close to the Pas valleys. Orbaneja del Castillo and Frías have small, very charming places to stay.
When to go
Spring and autumn are ideal for seeing the waterfalls in flow and walking. In summer there’s more going on and village festivals; in winter it’s cold and some rural houses close.
Getting around
You need a car: the villages are spread out and public transport is scarce. Burgos and Bilbao are about an hour and a half away.
