Orbaneja, by the waterfall

The village is small and quick to walk round. Sleeping here has a clear advantage: in the evening the visitors’ cars leave and you are left with the stone houses, the limestone rocks and the sound of the water flowing from the Cueva del Agua. There are few beds, almost all in rural houses and small guesthouses, so book well ahead in summer and on long weekends.

Park in the car park beside the road, because the village streets are narrow and steep.

Escalada and the Ebro canyon

Escalada is very close, on the N-623 between Burgos and Santander, where it crosses the Ebro. It is a quiet village overlooking the canyon, with rural houses and quick access to Orbaneja and the canyon viewpoints. It suits those who want to explore the area without driving in and out of the waterfall village every day. Being on the main road, it is also convenient for continuing to Cantabria or returning to Burgos.

Rudrón valley

Heading south on the N-623 you come to Valdelateja, Covanera and Tubilla del Agua, villages of the Rudrón valley. Covanera has the Pozo Azul, a turquoise spring. It is the perfect base for hiking and cold river swims. The villages are tiny: plan on cooking at home or eating at the local bar.

Sedano and its valley

Sedano is the main village of the area and the place with the most services nearby: a shop, a pharmacy and a restaurant or two. From there you drive to Orbaneja, the Pozo Azul or the Puentedey bridge. It is a good option if you are travelling for several days or with children, because the basics are at hand and the roads to the canyon villages are short. At night, though, it is a small-village atmosphere and everything closes early.
