Where to stay in Frías: the best areas
Upper town and castle
The upper part of town, between the castle and the church of San Vicente, is where the hanging houses and stone streets are concentrated. Staying here means seeing the town empty at night and looking out over the Tobalina valley at sunrise, before visitors’ cars arrive.
The choice is small, rural cottages with few rooms, and the slopes are steep. It suits couples and anyone after an unhurried medieval atmosphere.
Down to the Ebro bridge
At the foot of the hill, by the medieval bridge with its central tower, the ground is flatter and easier to reach with luggage. You have the river for walks and the climb to the old town along the cobbled street in a few minutes. It suits families with young children or anyone with suitcases who prefers not to haul them uphill.
Tobera
A very short drive away, the hamlet of Tobera hides in a gorge with waterfalls on the river Molinar and, wedged between the rocks, the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Hoz. There is rural accommodation surrounded by rock and woodland, perfect for anyone wanting nature and footpaths. Nights are cool even in summer, and Tobera’s smaller medieval bridge deserves a stop.
The Tobalina valley
The valley villages, such as Quintana-Martín Galíndez, its capital, are spread among cereal fields and orchards on the banks of the Ebro. They have a few more services than Frías and easy roads to Trespaderne, Oña and the rest of Las Merindades.
Choose this area if you are driving and plan several trips around the area, or if you are travelling in a group and want a big house with land.
