Old town and the alcázar

The old centre is laid out around the twin-towered fortress of the Constables and the Plaza Mayor, with arcades and terraces. A few steps away is the Santa Clara monastery, founded by the Velasco family, and streets of manor houses you can cover on a stroll.

It is the place for anyone who wants monuments, bars and shops within walking distance. At night there is life on the square, especially in summer and at weekends.

The newer town and the Trueba riverbank

Beyond the old town, the city opens into more modern streets that run down to the river Trueba and its walks. Here there are supermarkets, street parking and quick access to the area’s roads. It suits anyone travelling by car, families staying several days or people here on business who want services at hand.

Villarcayo

Villarcayo, a few kilometres away, is the capital of the Merindad de Castilla la Vieja and has the air of a market town, with its Plaza Mayor and walks along the river Nela, which joins the Trueba close by. It is an alternative with a good choice of places to eat and a starting point for Puentedey, the Hocinos gorge and Espinosa de los Monteros.

Hamlets around Medina

To the north and east, the hamlets around Medina mix meadows, Romanesque churches and stone houses with vegetable gardens. They are the choice for anyone after a rural cottage, silence and open scenery who doesn’t mind a few minutes’ drive for dinner.

From here it is easy to get around the whole area: Frías, Ojo Guareña or Oña are within day-trip range. Always bring a car, as public transport between hamlets is very scarce.
