Where to stay in the Sierra de Madrid

What the Sierra de Madrid is like

It’s the mountainous north and north-west of the Madrid region: the Sierra de Guadarrama, the Lozoya valley and the Sierra Norte. It has pine forests, reservoirs, stone villages and hiking routes less than an hour from the capital.

Which village to choose

Rascafría, in the Lozoya valley, is a good base for the monastery of El Paular and the Peñalara routes. Cercedilla and Guadarrama sit next to the mountain passes and have local trains. Manzanares el Real and Miraflores are at the foot of La Pedriza, and Buitrago and Patones are the gateway to the Sierra Norte.

When to go

At weekends it fills with people from Madrid all year round, especially in spring, autumn and with the first snow. On weekdays there’s more space and better prices in rural houses and small hotels.

Getting around

Local Cercanías trains reach Cercedilla, Guadarrama and El Escorial, and there are buses from Plaza de Castilla to the Sierra Norte. A car is best for getting from one valley to another.
