Where to stay in Rascafría: the best areas

Rascafría village

Rascafría's centre has almost all the services of the upper Lozoya valley: restaurants serving mountain cooking, a bakery, a pharmacy and shops. It has stone houses, a square that is lively at weekends and the river very close. Staying here lets you walk to dinner and start hiking from your door. It is the most balanced option if it is your first visit or you have children.

El Paular and the Puente del Perdón

On the outskirts, by the Benedictine monastery of El Paular, the atmosphere is even quieter. A stroll away are the Puente del Perdón, the arboretum dedicated to Giner de los Ríos and the cabin of the Bosque de Finlandia, plus the Las Presillas natural pools in summer. It is for those seeking rest and scenery who do not mind walking or driving into the village for dinner.

Oteruelo and Alameda del Valle

Down the valley, Oteruelo del Valle, which belongs to Rascafría, and Alameda del Valle are small hamlets of stone houses and meadows with livestock. There are rural houses and very little going on. They suit couples and those who want to experience real valley life, with the car always to hand. In spring and autumn, the surrounding meadows and woods change colour and can be seen from your window.

Pinilla del Valle and the reservoir

A little further south, Pinilla del Valle overlooks the Pinilla reservoir and is known for the Valley of the Neanderthals archaeological site. Sleeping in this part leaves you well placed to explore the whole Lozoya valley and head for the Cotos, Navafría or Morcuera passes. Choose this area if you want to move around the sierra every day and do not mind driving winding mountain roads.
