What the Somontano is like
It’s the area of Huesca between the plain and the Pyrenees, known for its designation-of-origin wines. It has vineyards, olive groves and the Sierra y Cañones de Guara nature park.
Which village to choose
Barbastro, the capital, has more hotels and the cathedral. Alquézar, above the Vero river canyon, is one of the prettiest villages in Aragon, with small hotels and rural houses.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the seasons for the Vero river walkways and canyoning in Guara. September is harvest time, and in August Barbastro holds its wine festival.
Getting around
You need a car to go from winery to winery. Huesca is about 50 km away.
