Where to stay in Barbastro: the best areas
El Coso and Plaza del Mercado
El Coso is Barbastro’s shopping spine: a wide street with shops, cafés and terraces that fill up in the evening. Plaza del Mercado is very close. If you sleep along this stretch, you can go out to dinner without watching the clock and reach the cathedral on a short walk.
It suits anyone travelling without a vehicle, as the bus station is in town and daily life is done on foot.
The cathedral quarter and the river Vero
The upper part of the old town surrounds the cathedral of Santa María de la Asunción and the diocesan museum. From here the streets run down towards the Vero, with quiet corners and stone houses. It is the area for seeing Damián Forment’s altarpiece early and strolling the riverbank before heading out to the wineries.
The San Julián y Santa Lucía complex, where you can find out about Somontano wine, is also a few steps away.
The newer town and A-22 approaches
On the avenues connecting with the A-22, the motorway between Huesca and Lleida, there are places to stay with parking and direct access. They suit you if you are touring Upper Aragon and want to come and go without crossing the centre. They are also convenient for a business trip. From this part you head out to Monzón or the Sierra de Guara without going through narrow streets.
El Pueyo and Castillazuelo
On a hill to the west stands the monastery of El Pueyo, with views over the vineyards and mountains. To the north, Castillazuelo sits by the Vero, on the way to Alquézar. The surrounding villages have rural cottages for anyone after silence, open skies and proximity to the Somontano wineries. From the monastery you can see much of the area on clear days.
