Where to stay in Catalonia
Barcelona
Barcelona has the biggest choice. The Gothic Quarter and El Born put the old town on your doorstep; the Eixample has roomier, well-connected hotels; Barceloneta and Poblenou are right by the beach. Prices rise sharply in high season and during big trade fairs.
Costa Brava and Costa Dorada
The Costa Brava, to the north, has coves among the pine trees and villages such as Tossa, Calella de Palafrugell and Cadaqués; Girona is a good city base. To the south, the Costa Dorada has long, family-friendly beaches in Salou, Cambrils and Calafell, with Tarragona and its Roman ruins close by.
The Pyrenees and inland Catalonia
The Catalan Pyrenees (Val d'Aran, Cerdanya, Vall de Boí) have ski resorts and mountain hotels, and are a hiking destination in summer. Inland, the Empordà, the Priorat and the Garrotxa have old masias (farmhouses) turned into rural hotels.
