Eixample

CerdΓ 's grid of square blocks is the most balanced area to stay. Passeig de GrΓ cia has Casa BatllΓ³ and La Pedrera, and the Sagrada FamΓlia is on the right-hand side of the district. There is a metro station on almost every corner and the nights are quiet. It suits families and business travellers. The left side of the Eixample has more bars and restaurants, while the right side is grander.

Best-rated in this area: Seventy Barcelona, with a score of 9.8 from 4,113 reviews.

Gothic Quarter and El Born

If you want to do everything on foot, stay in the old city. The Gothic Quarter puts you next to the cathedral, Plaça Reial and La Rambla. El Born has the basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, the Picasso Museum and Ciutadella Park next door. The streets are narrow and some bars stay open late, so parts of it are noisy.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Rec Barcelona - Adults Only, with a score of 9.6 from 4,557 reviews.

GrΓ cia

Once an independent town, Gràcia still feels like a village. Its squares, such as Plaça del Sol and Plaça de la Vila, fill with terraces in the evening. It is close to Park Güell and Casa Vicens is right in the neighbourhood. Ideal if you want a local atmosphere and small independent shops. The green metro line stops at Fontana and Lesseps.

Best-rated in this area: Residència Erasmus Gracia, with a score of 8.3 from 7,283 reviews.

Barceloneta and Poblenou

To be by the sea, Barceloneta is the old fishermen's quarter, with rice restaurants and a city beach. Poblenou, further north, is quieter and has the Rambla del Poblenou and less crowded beaches. It is also home to the 22@ tech district, full of offices. Both areas are on the yellow metro line.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Oasis, with a score of 8.5 from 6,085 reviews.

Sants and MontjuΓ―c

Sants station is where the high-speed trains arrive. Plaça d'Espanya and the Fira trade fair grounds are next door, and you can go up Montjuïc to see the MNAC art museum and the gardens. It is the best choice if you arrive by train or are coming for a trade fair. Sants has direct metro links to the centre.

Best-rated in this area: BarcelΓ³ Sants, with a score of 8.7 from 10,532 reviews.
